The Basics of Child Rearing

Parenting and not prostitution is the true oldest profession. Everyone knows it is never simple and is in fact highly complicated. This is not a one-size-fits-all situation, but there are some basic tenets that can ensure some very good results.

Always strive to be a role model. One truism about children is that they are perpetually preoccupied with imitating or emulating everything they witness so always be careful about what they see and hear.

Establish a clear distinction between right and wrong and stick to it. This should be supported by a system of rewards and penalties so that you can properly set your children’s expectations. Getting rewarded for doing what is right and punished for doing what is wrong will instill the right set of values on your children.

Provide an abundant amount of love and respect and treat children as individuals, but set definite boundaries and make sure they recognize your authority over them. Allow them to learn from their mistakes, give them ample play time and make sure you laugh and play with them.

Support them in their endeavors and always create learning opportunities outside of school. Encourage a moderate measure of emotional closeness so that your children will neither become overly clingy nor become too detached.

If you are successful in providing all these to your children, you can expect them to grow up as responsible adults who can adapt to all situations in a moral and wise manner.
